Three men recently came to the rescue of two young girls, one of them wearing a hijab, who were being shouted at and insulted by a man on a train. When they intervened, the man harassing the girls pulled a knife and slashed the three men before fleeing. One of the two dying men, Taliesin Namkai-Meche, uttered his last words, saying, ”’I want everybody on the train to know, I love them.” The third man, Micah Fletcher, who survived the slashing, wrote a poem after in which he said:
I am alive.
I spat in the eye of hate and lived.
This is what we must do for one
another
We must live for one another.
Now, it is your turn: what would be your last words?
I don’t know what my last words would be, but I know I will die because it was the right time not because I need to.
